In 2018 we published the 50th volume of Lighting Research and Technology. To mark this achievement, issue 50(1) comprised a series of invited articles which focused on several key themes of lighting research, authored by leading researchers in those themes. In the past decade LR&T has increased in extent – both physically (an increase from four to eight issues per year) and geographically (a greater proportion of articles are now from international authors). The current impact factor is 2.331, an improvement on that for previous years and the first time it has exceeded 2.0. One important factor behind the success of LR&T has been the work of Peter Boyce as Editor-inChief, a role he undertook since issue 40(1) in 2008. Peter decided to stand down as Editor at the end of 2019; to mark his achievements as Editor and as a researcher, issue 50(8) included a series of discussions from several authors describing their favourites from amongst Peter’s many articles. Looking ahead there are short-term and long-term plans for the editorial team. The long-term plan is that, from January 2021, I will be taking over the role of Editor-in-Chief in collaboration with seven Associate Editors. In other words, we require eight of us to carry out the work Peter conducted alone for many years. The contribution of the Society for Light and Lighting in supporting and enabling these changes is greatly appreciated. The short-term plan, for 2020, is that Associate Editors will be taking more responsibility for managing the review process with administration support from Sage: this will ensure continuation of the rigorous review process which Peter and others have carefully established. The seven Associate Editors are Myriam Aries, Teresa Goodman, Kevin Mansfield, John Mardaljevic, Ashish Pandharipande, Michael Royer and Peter Thorns. They were chosen, primarily, for their knowledge within a specific area of research, but they also represent a broader geographic area. There are changes also within the editorial board. Luke Price is coordinating the editorials and opinion articles. Geoff Cook will be standing down as chairman of the board in 2021, and alongside considering his replacement we are considering the gender balance of the board.
