Preparation and Characterization of Calix[4]aren-immobilized Magnetic Microcapsule and Its Application in Heavy Metal Removal

ABSTRACT This article describes the preparation of the polysulfone microcapsule (CPM) containing both 5,11,17,23-tetrakis[(dimethylamine)methyl]-25,26,27,28-tetrahydroxy calix[4]arene and magnetic nanoparticles. The structure of CPM was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, thermo gravimetric analysis and elemental analysis techniques. Moreover, heavy metal ions adsorption capability of the porous CPM toward Pb2+, Cu2+, Co2+, Cd2+ and Zn2+ ions was investigated. The results indicate that CPM exhibited selectivity in an order for Zn2+>Cu2+>Cd2+>Pb2+>Co2+. In addition, reusability studies for CPM were evaluated, and it was found that CPM could be reused without significant loss in their adsorption capacity for five times Zn2+ adsorption–regeneration cycles.
