Hydro-distillation of spent lubricating oil and characterization of the product

Abstract Identification of hydrocarbons in spent lubrication oil was carried out to establish it as valuable petrochemical feedstock. Spent oil, was collected mixed with water and fractionated under a controlled distillation set-up at 170 °C. Distillate and residue products were analyzed using GC-MS spectrometry method. Recovered products were predominantly aromatic compounds in the carbon range less than C20. Unsaturated compound were prevalent in the spent oil. Aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbon compounds such as 2,5-Octadecadiynoic acid, methyl ester (C19H30O2), 2,9-Heptadecadiene-4,6diyn-8-ol (C17H24O), 5,8,11,14-Eicosatetraynoic acid, methyl ester (C21H34O2), 2-Hexadecanol (C13H34O), 1,3,5-trimethyl benzene (C9H12) and p-xylene (C8H10) were identified.
