The 500 °C Isothermal Section of the Al-Co-Nd Ternary System

The Al-Co-Nd isothermal section at 500 °C has been investigated in the whole composition range by means of x-ray diffraction, optical and scanning electron microscopy and electron probe microanalysis. The following ternary phases have been identified or confirmed: τ 1 -Nd 4 CoAl ( cF 96-Gd 4 RhIn), τ 2 -NdCo 2 Al 8 ( oP 44-CeFe 2 Al 8 ), τ 3 -NdCo 3 Al 11 (unknown), τ 4 -Nd 2 Co 3 Al 9 ( oS 56-Y 2 Co 3 Ga 9 ) τ 5 -Nd 5 Co 2 Al 2 (unknown), τ 6 -Nd 2 Co 6 Al 19 ( mS 108 U 2 Co 6 Al 19 ), τ 7 -Nd 7 Co 6 Al 7 ( tP 40-Pr 7 Co 6 Al 7 ), τ 8 -Nd 2 Co 2 Al ( oI 10-W 2 CoB 2 ), τ 9 -Nd 13 Co 14− x Al 4+ x (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.7, oS 28-W 3 CoB 3 ). The complex system of phase equilibria linking the large number of binary and ternary Al-Co-Nd phases at 500 °C has been completely determined. The general characteristics of the section have been discussed in comparison with those of other Al-Co-R systems.
