Investigation on the 773 K Isothermal Section of the Er-Ni-Si Ternary Phase Diagram by X-ray Powder Diffraction

The isothermal section phase diagram of Er-Ni-Si ternary system at 773 K was created by x-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis in this paper. Seventeen known ternary compounds ErNiSi, ErNi 2 Si 2 , ErNiSi 2 , Er 2 Ni 3 Si 5 , ErNiSi 3 , Er 3 Ni 6 Si 2 , ErNi 10 Si 2 , Er 3 NiSi 2 , ErNi 2 Si, ErNi 5 Si 3 , ErNi 4 Si, ErNi 6 Si 6 , Er 33.3 Ni 18.7−10.7 Si 48−56 (Er 2 NiSi 3 ), Er 3 Ni 2 Si 4 , Er 33.3 Ni 8.7−4.7 Si 58−62 (Er 4 NiSi 7 ), Er 8 Ni 31 Si 11 , and Er 5 Ni 2 Si 3 (unknown structure type, similar to Dy 5 Ni 2 Si 3 ) have been testified. A new compound Er 37 Ni 3 Si 60 (unknown structure type) has been confirmed by excluding its XRD pattern as a superposition of nearby phase patterns. Part diffraction peaks have obvious movement with the change of Si content in Er 2 NiSi 3 solid solution, and more moving directions are not consistent, especially at (002) and (110) planes. At the same time, quasi–binary solid solutions were detected in Er 2 Ni 17− x Si x , ErNi 5− x Si x , Er 2 Ni 7− x Si x , ErNi 3− x Si x , ErNi 2− x Si x , ErNi − x Si x , and ErSi − x Ni x compounds. Other binary compounds of the Er-Ni-Si system do not show any visible solubility of the third element. If the mixture of α-ErSi 2 and β-ErSi 2 phases is regarded as one ErSi 2 phase, the 773 K isothermal section of the phase diagram of Er-Ni-Si system consists of 55 three phase regions and ten solid solution lines.
