Teams across the UK are coming up with innovative ways to combat the climate emergency, finds Matthew Limb
The NHS has a “moral obligation” to reduce the harmful effects on health from its activities, says James Dixon, head of sustainability for Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
He proposed that the trust should agree to publicly declare a “climate emergency” and fast track a reduction in carbon emissions.
The trust became “the first healthcare organisation in the world” to declare a climate emergency in June 2019 and has driven a range of local, regional, and national initiatives. A number of city-wide action groups have been formed and a climate action group established across the region’s integrated care system, led by the trust’s chief executive, Dame Jackie Daniel.
“Nationally, we have established a Shelford Group of sustainability leads, and Dame Jackie is a member of the NHS Net Zero expert panel established to develop the NHS Net Zero plan,” says Dixon.
The trust also formed an executive oversight group for climate emergency action and embedded climate emergency and carbon reduction into the trust’s strategy for 2019-24.
There has been an 11% reduction in direct carbon emissions over the course of a year and a 40% reduction in the environmental impact of volatile anaesthetic gases.
Dixon says, “The climate emergency is a health emergency. In publicly declaring this we have been honest about the scale of the challenge and have gained top-level support for delivering on this as a priority.”
Surgery has a bad reputation when it comes to wasting resources, with minimal recycling and high energy use in operating theatres.
