With almost 5·5 billion worldwide web search-engine queries daily in 2019, of which an estimated 7% were health related, people can rapidly gather medical information online that might influence their perceptions about diseases and treatments. Search-engine queries are a valuable resource for health-sciences research, reflecting population-level interest, and delivering an unbiased sample of web-search data that have been associated with infectious disease outbreaks and cancer screening.
