Bovine serum albumin adsorption by Bi-functionalized HMS, nitrilotriacetic acid -amine modified hexagonal mesoporous silicate

Abstract In the present study, a novel hexagonal mesoporous silica (HMS), functionalized by nitrilotriacetic acid anhydride (NTAA) and 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTES), was synthesized (NH2/HMS/NTAA) and applied for the adsorption of bovine serum albumin (BSA). XRD, BET, SEM, TEM and FTIR analysis were applied to identify the structure and morphology of the synthesized nano-adsorbent. The effect of some basic parameters, such as pH of the BSA solution, adsorbent dosage, contact time and temperature on the adsorption of BSA were investigated. After modification, the BET surface area of the HMS was reduced from 885 m2/g to 51 m2/g which can be attributed to the existence of NTTA and amine groups that limited the adsorption of nitrogen molecules. The results of the equilibrium study proved that the adsorption of BSA on NH2/HMS/NTAA followed a Langmuir isotherm with a high maximum adsorption capacity of 1000 mg/g, which proves mono-layer adsorption. Kinetic and thermodynamic studies also demonstrated that a pseudo-second order kinetic model was the predominant model and the adsorption process was exothermic, physical and spontaneous.
