Cutting-edge developments in mass spectrometry: A hands-on workshop

Abstract Mass spectrometry is increasingly being taught as a significant topic in undergraduate chemistry courses. However, most attention still goes to structure/spectrum correlations with a focus on particular well-established mass spectrometry techniques. Here we describe a workshop format designed to introduce upper-level undergraduate students to mass spectrometry through first-hand experience with novel instrumentation. The aim is to aid in conceptual understanding through hands-on experiments with a variety of types of instruments. The workshop was developed with contributions from three research groups, allowing the students to be part of several experiments during a single laboratory period, while having access to diverse facilities and multiple instruments. The experiments were led by expert graduate students who either use or developed the new techniques or instruments as part of their Ph. D. research projects. Additionally, the workshop attendees included not only undergraduate students, but also graduate students from multiple institutions as well as industrial scientists, with constant interaction between members of all the groups. The experience proved valuable for all attendees, as evaluated through anonymous surveys and questionnaires taken by the undergraduates, other attendees and the experiment leaders. It is anticipated that this written version of the workshop will also be effective in conveying mass spectrometry concepts and skills to readers, providing awareness of novel technologies and applications.
