Concentration-depentent investigation of green and red upcoversion luminescence in Er3+ doped and Yb3+-Er3+ codoped GdOBr

Er3+ doped and Er3+-Yb3+ codoped GdOBr powders were successfully synthesized by the solid-state reaction method. The structural properties of the samples were confirmed by the X-ray diffraction patterns. Under 980 nm excitation, upconversion spectra composed of green and red bands originate from 2H11/24I15/2, 4S3/24I15/2 and 4F9/24I15/2 electronic transitions of Er3+ ions, respectively. Upconversion emission was observed tuning from green to red as function of concentration of Yb3+ or Er3+ ion. A possible upconversion mechanism of Er3+ solely doped and Er3+-Yb3+ codoped GdOBr was proposed by an energy-level diagram in light of dependence of emission intensities on pumping power.
