On the basis of a meta-analysis of three cohort studies, Gill Schierhout and colleagues reported a strong inverse association between human T-cell lymphotropic virus 1 (HTLV-1) and gastric cancer (relative risk 0·45, 95% CI 0·28–0·71). The authors proposed that this protective effect might be due to the lower prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection among individuals with HTLV-1 than in individuals without HTLV-1, with the possibility that progression to immunosuppression might result in a decreased ability to sustain a H pylori infection.
