The DC power feeder for railway electrification usually consists of multiple parallel cables for handling high current as well as for redundancy design. A non-intrusive condition monitoring of the DC feeder is proposed for early detection of defects related to poor electrical contact due to ageing and corrosion, as well as accidental damage. The proposed method adopts an inductive coupling approach without direct electrical contact, which extracts the impedance of the DC feeder when it is still energized under its usual operating condition. By correlating the measured impedance of the feeder to the impedance of the equivalent feeder circuit, the defective cable can be identified and replaced.
