Synthesis and application of silver nanorods for the colorimetric detection of sulfate in water

Abstract PEG-25 stabilized silver nanorods were synthesized and applied as a sensing probe for the colorimetric determination of sulfate in water. The PEG-25 stabilized silver nanorods were characterized by the UV–Vis absorption measurement and the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. Mixing the sensing probe (PEG-25 stabilized silver nanorods) and 10 μM SO42−, the silver nanorods aggregated and the color of solution was changed from ruby color to blackish blue color accordingly. The spectral shift of the sensing probe in the presence and absence of SO42− was monitored for SO42− quantification. Determination of SO42− revealed limit of detection (LOD) of 0.078 μM and 0.061 μM in deionized water and natural water, respectively. The comparative study revealed that the application of PEG-25 stabilized silver nanorods as sensing probe for SO42− exhibited an excellent sensitivity compared to other reported methods.
