European Heart Journal – Case Reports (EHJ-Case Reports) is a dedicated open access case reports journal.¹ During 2019, the journal received over 600 submissions. Of those accepted, each had an important message about patient care. However, we selected the case by Beekman-van Solkema and colleagues, entitled ‘A rare cause of acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction: case report of native aortic valve thrombosis’ as the EHJ-Case Reports Case of the Year for 2019.² The reasons for selecting this excellent case from among those published in 2019 reflect the broader themes that make a case description into a great case report.
