Effect of heat treatment on microstructures and tensile properties of TA19 alloy fabricated by laser metal deposition

Influences of solution temperature and subsequent cooling rate on microstructures and room temperature tensile properties of near α-TA19 alloy (Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo-0.1Si) manufactured by laser metal deposition were investigated. The results show that after the solution and aging treatment, fine Basketweave structure of the as-fabricated TA19 alloy was transformed into Widmannstatten structure for the samples heat treated in the single β phase region and double lamellar special bimodal structure for those heat treated in the α+β two-phase region. The as-fabricated TA19 samples subjected to solution treatment at 1000 °C with subsequent oil cooling and aging treatment have a good synergy of strength and plasticity due to the best combination of the content and width of αp and αs+α’ martensite phases. Not only the widths of αp and αs/α’ martensite phases affect the yield stress of the alloy, but also the phase contents of the double lamellar special bimodal structure alloy play an important role. The rule of mixtures is developed to predict the yield stress of the LMD-fabricated TA19 alloy after heat treatment in the α+β two-phase region.
