Portraying Pregnancy: From Holbein to Social Media displays a mixture of original portraits and reproductions, although, in most of the art, the woman's pregnancy bump is hidden by voluminous clothing or simply ignored. The exceptions are the obviously pregnant women from the late Tudor and Jacobean period, such as Katherine Carey, Lady Knollys (1562), who I found the most historically interesting. Curator Karen Hearn has pieced together these women's lives as thoroughly as she can, which is no mean feat given the lack of historical records pertaining to even the women of wealth and aristocracy depicted here. Working class women are not represented unless you include James Gillray's satire of Emma Hamilton, a servant who later became the wife of Sir William Hamilton and the lover of Lord Nelson.
