His biography included years of study, participation in the Great Patriotic War, years of Nazi captivity in Germany followed by imprisonment in Soviet concentration camps, and a rapid scientific career unexpectedly interrupted by expulsion from the Institute of the Natural History and Technology (IIET) of the USSR Academy of Sciences, which he himself had fostered.
