Effect of DC stray current on electrochemical behavior of low-carbon steel and 10%Cr steel in saturated Ca(OH)2 solution

Abstract The effect of direct current (DC) stray current on passivation behavior of low-carbon (LC) reinforcing steel and a 10 %Cr reinforcing steel in saturated Ca(OH)2 solution was investigated by means of EIS, AFM and XPS measurements. In addition, cyclic potentiodynamic polarization curves were employed to evaluate the influence of stray current on chloride-induced pitting corrosion behavior of steels. The results indicate that stray current leads to reduced passivation capability of LC steel, whereas stray current induced degradation of passive film is less pronounced for 10 %Cr steel. Moreover, pitting corrosion resistance of both steels decreases significantly in the presence of stray current.
