NURBS-Augmented Finite Element Method for static analysis of arbitrary plates

Abstract The Isogeometric Analysis (IGA) uses the Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline (NURBS) basis functions for the representation of both the geometry and the field variables. In IGA, the enforcement of the essential boundary conditions is complex because the NURBS basis functions do not satisfy the Kronecker-Delta property owing to their non-interpolating nature. Thus in the present formulation the strength of the NURBS basis functions to represent the geometry very accurately is considered and its weakness for representing the field variables is avoided by adopting classical finite element basis functions for the field variables and a new finite element method is coined as NURBS-Augmented Finite Element Method (NAFEM) is proposed.
