Arc length stable method of GTAW based on adaptive Kalman filter

During the GTAW process, the arc length changes due to the uneven surface of the workpiece and the loss of the tungsten electrode. In order to keep the arc length stable and improve the welding quality, this paper proposed the application of an adaptive Kalman filter as a signal preprocessor for automatic voltage control. In this paper, a linear relationship model between arc voltage and arc length in DC pulse GTAW was established, and Kalman filter and adaptive Kalman filter were applied to the welding process. Experiments showed that the arc length adaptive method based on adaptive Kalman filter could significantly improve the arc length stability. By using the adaptive Kalman filter algorithm, the standard deviation of the arc length was reduced by 35.4 %.
