Flow boiling heat transfer under marine motions: A comprehensive review

Abstract Flow boiling heat transfer under marine motions is an important research area that provides more opportunities for the development of offshore applications. In this paper, a comprehensive review of the literature on flow boiling under marine motion is presented, including experimental and numerical studies. The effects of marine motions on heat transfer coefficient, critical heat flux, pressure drop, flow instability, bubble characteristics and flow pattern are addressed. Even though very limited researches have been done on the last two topics, they are reviewed because of their importance. The mechanisms responsible for the enhancement or deterioration of flow boiling performances are discussed and summarized. Overall, the achievements, disagreements and contradictions of the research conclusions are clarified. Additionally, the topics and directions worthy of attention for future research are put forward.
