Patients with inflammatory bowel disease have an increased background risk for gastrointestinal and, to a lesser degree, extraintestinal malignancies, which is also somewhat influenced by adequate control of the underlying inflammation [Table 1] and eventually increased by using immunosuppressive [IMS] therapy.¹ Among these malignacies, the cancer with highest relative risk together with a low 5-year overall survival is small bowel adenocarcinoma [SBA], although the absolute risk is low.
