Although error in refraction measurement with both machines and phoropters has long been recognized,1–3 study of its effects on observed cylinder change was generally ignored until a study by Bullimore et al.,4 which showed that the Correction Index will be much higher than 1 for low levels of cylinder correction because of refraction measurement error.
