Interpenetrating spiral vortices and other co-existing states in suspension Taylor-Couette flow

We report interpenetrating spiral vortices (ISV), a coexisting state of upward and downward propagating spiral/helical vortices, in a neutrally-buoyant suspension undergoing Taylor-Couette flow, with the inner cylinder rotating and the outer cylinder at rest. Along with ISV and Taylor vortex flow (TVF), the non-axisymmetric patterns, such as the wavy Taylor vortices (WTV) and spiral vortex flows (SVF), and the co-existing states of TVF+WTV' andTVF+SVF’ are also uncovered. It is shown that the `TVF+SVF’ pattern appears as a primary transition, which gives birth to interpenetrating spirals as a secondary transition beyond a critical Reynolds number, with the final state being that of WTV over a range of particle volume fractions and Reynolds number.
