Abstract Gas hydrates are considered as a strategic unconventional clean hydrocarbon resource. This paper analyses the techno-economic viability of the methane gas production from the fracture-dominated gas hydrate reservoir in the Krishna-Godavari basin, east coast of India based on multi-well configurations. The analysis is done using the gas hydrate field depressurization-based production numerical simulator NIOT-IndHyd 1.1 and the gas hydrate field development return-of-investment cost model with reservoir petro-physical properties and India's current natural gas import price as inputs. The results indicate that reservoirs with post-dissociation permeability (PoDP) of >200mD with hydrate saturations >75% or higher PoDP are economic production targets for the present Indian natural gas import price of US$ 4.66/MMBtu. The payback period for multi-well configurations with a floating production unit for various reservoir post dissociation permeabilities are also presented.
