Clark and Winegard (This issue; hereafter CW) propose that the evolutionary incentives faced by our ancestors often led them to promote their own group’s welfare at the expense of finding and disseminating facts. In other words, humans evolved to prioritize tribalism over truth seeking. In our modern world, this proclivity represents an inherited glitch in our collective psyche, with major ramifications for political progress and scientific research. We find CW’s analysis compelling. In this commentary, we propose the addition of two further elements to their framework. First, we suggest sexual selection as an additional mechanism through which tribal tendencies evolved. Second, we suggest that the study of tribalism could be strengthened by drawing upon historical research. Finally, we conclude with a discussion of the risks inherent in CW’s proposed research agenda, in which social scientists ignore their preferences for how the world should be and pursue any and all hypotheses regardless of where they might lead.
