Boiling heat transfer enhancement by self-excited vibration

Abstract Various methods have been proposed to improve the boiling heat transfer coefficient. In this study, subcooled pool boiling is performed using a thin brass plate that is partly attached close to a heating surface. The plate can be vibrated because boiling bubbles grow and collapse in the gap between the plate and heating surface. The natural vibration frequency of the plate is investigated based on its material properties and fixing conditions. The wall temperature of the heating surface decreases by 5 K when the natural frequency of the plate matches the frequency of the growth and collapse of the boiling bubbles. The results show that the vibration material can improve the boiling heat transfer coefficient.
