Cover image: A walk in a forest, like the one pictured (photo by Hans Reijnen), tells us that tree species differ in, for example, their leaves. Yet largely invisible to us, tree roots also differ in shape and size. In Weemstra et al.'s study, The role of fine‐root mass, specific root length and life span in tree performance: A whole‐tree exploration (Funct Ecol. 2020; 34: 575–585. https://doi.org/10.1111/1365-2435.13520), the authors created model trees with different root systems to examine how such different root properties affect tree performance.
