Structures and magnetic properties of solid solutions Ba3Nd(Ru1-xIrx)2O9 (0 ≦ x ≦ 1.0) have been investigated. X-ray diffraction measurements show that Ba3NdRu2O9 (corresponding to x = 0) is hexagonal with space group P63/mmc. On the other hand, Ba3NdIr2O9 (x = 1.0) is monoclinic with space group C2/c. At an ambient temperature, the structures of Ba3Nd(Ru1-xIrx)2O9 change from hexagonal to monoclinic symmetry above x = 0.8. With increasing temperature, the monoclinic Ba3NdIr2O9 transforms to the hexagonal structure at 333 K. Magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements show that the x = 0 and x = 1.0 compounds are ferromagnetic below 24 and 17.4 K, respectively. Ferromagnetic behavior has been observed for their solid solutions, and the ferromagnetic transition temperature for Ba3Nd(Ru1-xIrx)2O9 solid solutions is the lowest at the intermediate composition x = 0.5.
