1 LESSON 1: FROM A VERY HUMBLE BEGINNING: DO NOT LET WHERE YOU COME FROM LIMIT YOUR GOALS

I grew up in a very small village in a very small island called Dominica, the Nature Island of the Caribbean. My parents had a partial elementary school education but did their best to ensure that their children had everything we needed. As a child, I wanted to pursue many different fields, from medical doctor, accountant, secretary, teacher, among other careers. Becoming a neuroscientist was nowhere on my radar because I did not know that a neuroscience career existed. I loved science but wanted to pursue business classes as well. I always knew that I wanted to achieve more than a high school diploma. I went to the country’s only state college and immediately started employment as a high school teacher. Because there were no associate’s or bachelor’s degree program in Dominica at the time, I knew I had to venture outside of the country for a post‐secondary education. I was drawn to the opportunities in the United States and vowed to pursue my education there.
