In such cases, it is useful at times to consider the predominant pattern in terms of predicting outcomes. Finally, there is also a need to develop standardized and optimized conventional MRI protocols to enable more effective cross-centre clinical research as well as clinical care. Functional MRI to determine areas of cognitive and executive function in the brain, or diffusion tractography to map out white matter tracts have shown promise in the research realm, but have not translated to routine clinical practice yet, and should therefore be used as complementary imaging techniques where feasible.
