It is my great pleasure and honor to introduce this special issue of Nucleosides, Nucleotides & Nucleic Acids in celebration of the 70th birthday (KOKI, Japanese traditional celebration of long life at the 70 years old) of Professor Akira Matusda, Emeritus Professor of Hokkaido University. Professor Akira Matusda was born in 1949 in Hokkaido, Japan. After graduating from Hokkaido Sapporo Minami High School, he entered Hokkaido University and obtained his BS form the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1972. In 1977, he was awared his PhD from Hokkaido University, under the direction of late Professor Tohru Ueda. After working as an assistant professor at Hokkaido University for one year, he then worked as a postdoctoral fellow in the research group of Prof. Daniel V. Santi at Unversity of California, San Francisco (1978–1979) and the research group of Drs. Jack J. Fox and Kyoichi A. Watanabe at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (1979–982). He returned to Japan and began again his academic career as an assistant professor at Showa University. In 1985, he came back his alma mater (Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Hokkaoido University) as an assistant professor. After being an associate professor (1986–1991), he was promoted to professor at Hokkaido University in 1991. During his academic carrer, I studied in his group as an undergraduate and graduate student (1986–1988) and worked with him as a faculty member (1988–2009). As you know, his research background is consistently medicinal chemistry based on nucleosides, nucleotides and nucleic acids. Thus far, five nucleoside derivatives (2-octynyladenosine (2-OA), 2’-deoxy-2’-methylidenecytidine (DMDC), 2’-cyano-2’-deoxy-1-b-D-arabinofuranosylcytosine (CNDAC) and its N-4 palmitoyl derivative (PCNDAC), and 3’-ethynylcytidine (ECyd)) developed by his group have entered clinical trials, and CNDAC is now in phase III clinical trial against acute myeloid leukemia in
