Over two dozen published articles (see Abersteiner et al., 2018) report a new approach to reconstructing parental kimberlite melt compositions. Abersteiner et al. (2018) advocate the primary mantle origin of salts in the Udachnaya-East kimberlite, and criticize the proposal for a crustal brine origin of these salts (Kostrovitsky et al., 2013). It is obvious that investigations claiming to disprove the classic approach to kimberlite rocks with low Na and Cl contents and low abundances of primary chlorites and sulphates (Williams, 1932; Dawson, 1980; Mitchell, 1986) should offer essential evidence. Abersteiner et al. (2018), in their detailed study of melt inclusion compositions in olivine and other minerals, include some inaccurate statements, which make their final conclusions doubtful.
