Substantial evidence shows that weight-related stigma is very pervasive, causes physical and psychological harm to people who experience it, and leads to discrimination in education, employment, and the health-care setting. To measure public knowledge of the causes and remedies of obesity and to investigate the association between specific beliefs about obesity, weight stigma, and attitudes towards treatment and research, we did a multinational, online, cross-sectional research survey among the general public and health-care professionals: the Attitudes, Stigma and Knowledge (ASK) Study (). The survey used a validated metric of weight stigma (F-Scale) and a set of questions designed specifically to investigate beliefs about the causes and remedies of obesity, attitudes toward available treatments, and research priorities. Scores on the F-Scale range from 1 to 5, with high scores representing more weight stigma and low scores representing less weight stigma. Here, we report an analysis of the primary outcome measures of the study.
