Mendelian randomization (MR) has unravelled many new insights into the causal mechanisms driving disease.1,2 Whilst elucidation of the aetiological role of risk factors and biomarkers in disease [e.g. blood lipids in coronary artery disease (CAD)3] is of clinical and public health importance, it is also valuable to know whether particular pharmacological targets, typically proteins, are of therapeutic relevance in specific diseases.
