Worldwide, 800 000 children die from pneumonia annually—more than from any other infectious disease that affects children younger than 5 years. Children in lower to middle income countries (LMICs), which carry the highest mortality burden, are most at risk. Established risk factors for childhood pneumonia include outdoor air pollution, household air pollution from cooking fuels, malnutrition, and lack of vaccination.
