A community-based organisation in the South Bronx, New York, NY, USA, is showing that engaging people on low incomes who have diabetes or prediabetes in well recognised US diabetes prevention programmes works to reduce costly complications from the disease and prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes in people at risk. “It's really possible to make progress in diabetes in a core area where many people did not think it was possible,” said Chris Norwood, Executive Director of , referring in part to her highlighting the 45% reduction in emergency room visits in 6 months achieved after implementing a Diabetes Self-Management Program (DSMP) in Bronx homeless shelters as well enrolling nearly 2000 Medicaid patients with diabetes on the programme. The latter is a big achievement in a poor community with a high percentage of minorities like the South Bronx, where engaging people in proven health promotion programmes is difficult given barriers to access and low levels of trust.
