Enhanced luminescent intensity in a free-standing erbium silicate microplate

ABSTRACT In this work, a single crystalline erbium/ytterbium silicate microplate, placed on a Si–SiO2 periodic channel substrate, is used to investigate the effect of surrounding refractive index on the emission efficiency of the materials. The light-emitting efficiency from the free-standing part of the microplate has been enhanced two times larger than that of the part supported by SiO2 substrate, due to the surrounding refractive index-dependent absorption coefficient of the materials. The relatively smaller refractive index of air surrounded the free-standing part contributes to the larger absorption coefficient hence higher emission intensity of the erbium/ytterbium silicate microplate.
