Abstract Polymers are highly diverse class of materials used in various segments of industries. The current work reports the friction and wear behaviour of two high-performance polymers (polyimide and polytetrafluoroethylene) with and without additives of aramid, carbon, glass and basalt fibres under most common tribological conditions. Comparably improved tribo-results of basalt fiber reinforced composites to other additives are seen. The presentation of the results is facilitated by wear mechanism maps to select the optimal working conditions. The comparison with conventional Hardox 400 and AISI 316 steels is provided. Effect of transfer film formation during sliding condition is also discussed. The characteristic wear mechanisms are presented and discussion is supported by Scanning Electron Microscope images.
