An Innovative Technique to Achieve Tunable Filtering Action by Ferroelectric Material in Infrared Region

Light filtering is an important aspect of device technology. It can be accomplished by various techniques viz., microwave filters: lumped-element inductive capacitive filters, planar filters, coaxial filters, cavity filters, dielectric filters, electro-acoustic filters, waveguide filters and energy and tunnelling-based filters. All the above conventional filters suffer from various inconsistencies arising from their individual active and passive components. We report a technique of IR filtering using ferroelectric liquid crystal; this technique may also be extended to other types of liquid crystals. The hydrogen bonded ferroelectric liquid crystal used in this technique is derived by mixing dodecyloxy carboxylic benzoic acid to dextro tartaric acid and is discussed. In the present communication, observation of light filtering action in the three notch filters of various frequencies in the region of (10–80 GHz) is examined.
