In 2014, UNAIDS set the ambitious 90–90–90 targets for 2020: 90% of people living with HIV will be diagnosed, 90% of those diagnosed will be on antiretroviral therapy (ART), and 90% of people on treatment will achieve viral suppression. If these targets are attained, 73% of people living with HIV will be virally suppressed by 2020. The 2016 UN Political Declaration on Ending AIDS expanded these commitments to include ongoing scale up towards the Fast-Track 95–95–95 targets by 2030, in addition to calling for a renewed focus on primary HIV prevention and zero discrimination, particularly in the populations most affected. It is predicted that reaching these targets will reduce annual new HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths by 90% compared with 2010.
