This article investigates the level of penetration and barriers to the uptake, of anaerobic digestion technology in 16 Caribbean different territories. All countries considered are small island developing states (SIDS), and face a similar challenge of energy security. Anaerobic digestion technology could be a viable option for a number of these nations to help address this issue of energy security. However, there are several parameters such as economic costs versus economic benefits, biomass and land space availability, or even education and awareness, that greatly influence the utilization of this technology by these nations. This article gives some insight into how these parameters influence the current level of use of the technology, and hopefully will provide guidance on how to improve the level of implementation of this technology, in the territories covered in this article. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
