People living with HIV face high amounts of distress and are more likely to have common mental disorders compared with the general population. Psychological health problems, such as depression, are associated with delayed diagnosis of HIV, poor adherence to antiretroviral therapy, and increased likelihood of disease progression. Managing the symptoms of mental health problems in people living with HIV is imperative to improve the disease prognosis and reduce the risk of virus transmission.
