In Latin American culture, el susto, which roughly translates as “the shock”, is an illness that is prompted by some kind of trauma. The heightened emotion is thought to cause your soul to leave your body. You are left enervated and listless. According to a 2016 , three-quarters of Mexicans think that type 2 diabetes is caused by el susto. “The bad diet and then el susto, that's why my blood sugar spiked”, explains Genoveva, one of the interviewees in Karen Akins' impressively researched documentary on Mexico's pioneering sugar tax.
