Crystallization of metastable and stable phases from hydrolyzed by rinsing precipitated amorphous calcium phosphates with a given Ca/P ratio of 1:1

Abstract Single-phase metastable α ¯ -calcium pyrophosphate, stable β-calcium pyrophosphate and their mixtures were prepared as nanopowders via procedures of the fast nitrate synthesis, rinse, lyophilization and subsequent heat treatment of the precipitates with a set Ca/P ratio of 1:1. It was revealed that rinsing under certain conditions (a high water/slurry value, relatively prolonged treatment and a high pH) resulted in hydrolysis and increase in the Ca/P ratio up to 1.5 in the precipitates. Single-phase metastable α ¯ - and stable β-tricalcium phosphates, mixtures with each other and the calcium pyrophosphates in a desired composition were processed by heat treatment of the hydrolyzed precipitates for producing prospective biomaterials.
