Inflammatory Bowel Disease Helpline Reduces Subsequent Inpatient Admission Rates

We read with interest the systematic review published by Fiorino et al., which identified several important structural components in facilitating quality of care in inflammatory bowel disease [IBD].1 They highlighted the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in the management of IBD, including improved access to care using dedicated IBD helplines.1 When telephone helplines are available to patients managed by the IBD unit, they have been found to be cost effective and useful, and help to promote self-management and awareness which enable earlier access to care and avoidance of unnecessary hospital admission.2
