Analysis of literature results for the effect of particle size in Au/TiO2 catalysts on their activities and activation energies (E) for CO oxidation by constructing ’Compensation’ plots of E vs. ln A (A = pre-exponential factor) leads directly to the conclusion that high activity is primarily due to particles so small as to be in the non-metallic state.
