Synthesis and photoisomerization behavior of polyamide-phenyleneethynylenes bearing azobenzene moieties in the main chain

Novel azobenzene-containing optically active polyamide-phenyleneethynylenes, poly( 2 – 3ap )–poly( 2 – 3bm ) were synthesized by the Sonogashira–Hagihara coupling polymerization of azobenzene-containing bis(iodophenylene) monomer 2 and m -, p -diethynylbenzene derivatives 3ap – 3bm . Polymers with number-average molecular weights of 1500–107,800 were obtained in 52%-quantitative yields. The azobenzene moiety of 2 showed reversible light-induced trans – cis isomerization, while the polymers showed irreversible isomerization depending on the composition of mixed solvents.
