According to several reviews that summarize the genetic diversity of plant species in relation to their life-history and ecological traits, forest trees have more genetic diversity than annuals or herbaceous perennials at both the population and species levels. In addition, the among-population genetic diversity in trees is significantly lower than most herbaceous perennials and annuals. Possible reasons why trees maintain relatively higher within-population genetic diversity than herbaceous perennials and annuals have not been critically discussed. Here, we discuss this observation in the context of the conservation of trees vs. herbaceous species and the reforestation and restoration of denuded areas. We recommend that guidelines and conservation genetic strategies should be designed differently for tree species vs. herbaceous perennial and annual species. Article impact statement: Guidelines and conservation genetic strategies should be designed differently for tree species versus herbaceous perennial and annual species.
