Nørrisgaard et al1 reported important findings from a randomized clinical trial that the odds of enamel defects in offspring were lowered by approximately 50% with high-dose vitamin D supplement during pregnancy than with the low dose during a 6-year follow-up. Enamel defects constitute a global problem reaching epidemic proportions,2 and identification and management of potential risk factors remains a major public health priority. The study by Nørrisgaard et al1 sheds some light on this problem, underscoring the importance of administering high-dose vitamin D to pregnant women. However, we are concerned about the residual confounding that might restrict explanation and extrapolation of these findings to the general population.
